Today the first snowdrop was flowering in my garden. Not the Common snowdrop Galanthus nivalis, but the Giant snowdrop, Galanthus elwesii. A couple of years ago an active substance was found in snowdrops: galanthamine what can be helpful in the treatment of "Alzheimer disease", though it is not a cure. Its origine is Turkey.
Vandaag bloeide het eerste sneeuwklokje in de tuin. Niet het gewone sneeuwklokje maar het Groot of Turks sneeuwklokje, Galanthus elwesii. Herkenbaar aan de vroege bloei en de extra groene vlek boven het v-tje op de bloembuis. Een aantal jaar geleden is ontdekt dat een stofin de plant, galanthamine behulpzaam kan zijn bij Alzheimer. Het is echter geen geneesmiddel. De oorspronkelijke groeiplaats is Turkije
